About Swanspool Pavilion

From private estate to a place for everyone

Swanspool Pavilion sits at the heart of one of Wellingborough’s best-loved green spaces. Its story is one of generosity, community and a place created for the town to enjoy.

The Swanspool story

Swanspool is an old local place-name. Once written as Swan’s Pool, it is associated with the historic brook that runs through Wellingborough and has been used for centuries.

The Sharman family occupied the estate until 1918. The council bought the estate in 1919 and considered using part of the land for housing. Local boot and shoe manufacturer Frederick Charles Chamberlain then contributed £2,500 on the condition that the house and gardens were retained for the town’s benefit as a pleasure resort — “for now and all time”. The house and grounds opened to the public on 10 June 1919.

The Pavilion was built on the site of the estate’s former barn and stables. Designed by R. S. Henshaw to face into the park, with a fountain originally positioned in front, the original building was completed by 1929.

Nearly a century of community life

The Pavilion has long been part of Wellingborough life. Historic honours boards, original bench seating and a surviving licence for music, singing and dancing all record the many ways people have gathered here over the years.

Its architecture is civic and restrained, combining Neo-Georgian character with early modernist influence. The building’s real appeal is not grandeur for its own sake, but the way it opens towards the Gardens and welcomes people into the park.

Food & hospitality

Food and hospitality at Swanspool Pavilion are provided by Side Order Catering Ltd. Our approach is warm, generous and thoughtful, with freshly prepared menus for everyday visits and memorable occasions.

Rooted in Wellingborough

The strongest thread in Swanspool’s story is that a private estate became a place for everyone. We want the Pavilion to continue feeling welcoming to park visitors, local families and everyone gathering here.

A new chapter

As work continues, the Pavilion is taking shape as a relaxed café and a distinctive place for weddings and celebrations in the Gardens, carrying its original community purpose forward.
